- Traffic figures from Comscore showed that since the introduction of a pay wall, thetimes.co.uk and thesundaytimes.co.uk UUs have roughly halved. The sites received 1.6M UUs in July from 2.8M UUs in May (when the Times started taking registration details from users). Page Impressions fell from 29m in May to 9m in July. Note: many users would have been on the 1 month for £1 introductory offer in July.
- News Corp is rumoured to be spending $30m-$40m on a subscription news offering for mobiles and tablet platforms targeted at younger users, with content from across its news assets (WSJ, NY Post and Dow Jones).
- According to eMarketer, Facebook’s 2011 ad revenues will increase to $1.76bn (growth of 165% between 2009 and 2011). 60% of this will come from the US. On the other hand, MySpace’s ad revenue is forecasted to shrink by 14%, to $297m, in the same period.
- Mobile data from Gartner
shows a phenomenon increase in the sale of Android
smartphones – with market share growing from 1.8% a year ago to 17.2% in 2Q10 -
at the expense of Nokia and Blackberry sales rather than the iPhone (Blackberry
Torch prices have been cut by as much as 50% after only 150k units sold during
launch weekend).
- Google Ventures has invested in Ngmococ, a publisher with games on the iPhone and iPad. This follows Google’s investment in Zynga and acquisitions of Slide, Jambol and LabPixies. Google seems to be aiming for a credible social offering.
- AOL is reported to be spending >$50m to launch 500 local websites this year under the internet giant’s Patch umbrella as part of an effort to remake AOL as a destination for users searching for maps, reviews, and other local content. So far it has launched 100 local sites.
- A study by Next Issue Media forecast subscription revenues
from digital editions of newspapers and magazines could reach $3bn in the US by
2014, adding the industry could reap $1.3bn in incremental revenue when
cannibalisation was stripped out.
- ITV has appointed Robin Pembrooke (previously Director of
online/interactive at Global Radio) as MD of ITV.com. (ITV
shares up 3.7% yesterday on rumours of a US buyout).
